Ghoulies and Ghosties and Long-Legged Beasties and things that go

Sunset over pumpkin patch in autumn.

Yes, it’s that time of year again. Pumpkin patches are springing up everywhere, and shops are full of Halloween paraphernalia. I’ve bought a couple of pumpkins to carve so local children know they can come to my front door for Trick-or-Treating.

All are very seasonal but what does this say about Resilient Leaders’ Development?

Well, it reminded me of my sister’s approach to Halloween, which reflects, very well the leadership element of Authenticity.

‘Demonstrating integrity conviction operating to your values and ethics and being true to yourself’

She is a committed Christian and doesn’t support Halloween due to religious reasons. When her children were young, they knew that Halloween wasn’t an option although I can remember some pushback from my eldest niece! My sister remained authentic to her beliefs explaining that the children could decide for themselves when they were older in spite of what other people thought,

I thought that maybe this was rather unfair at the time, but  we all knew this about her, and she was clear about her beliefs and the reasons for them.

I’ve done a lot of reflection on this and since working with leaders and considering the part of the leadership section on authenticity I’ve realised how important it is. I’m sure we have all worked for leaders in the past who were inconsistent in their beliefs and changed their minds and priorities frequently.

It’s a question it’s work asking yourself. Take a few minutes to have a look at the Leadership Section below (in red)

Leadership qualities Venn diagram with three intersecting circles.

If you are aligning all the aspects of leadership presence you will find that:

You have presence even when you’re not in the room (people know how you think and react and are clear about the Direction of Travel and everyone understands this.

So Happy Halloween, whatever you decide to do!
